It’s an extraordinary experience to sleep amidst 200 million year old sandstone, awesome colours, blemishes, unplastered, tactile, soundproof, a sleep experience of NOTE. Waken to the sound of the wind sighing through the grasslands, the call of a blue korhaan far off. Francolin Self Catering Cottage, built from hand hewn magnificent sandstone blocks, barn style with high beamed ceiling, tin roof, cement painted floors, elemental, a touching of an ancient time when dinosaurs walked this valley, yet gloriously, luxuriantly comfortable, intimate, beautifully decorated and furnished, the views across our 200,000 million year old valley awesome. With open plan spaciousness, beautiful pampering bath and enclosed sandstone shower and toilet, a fully equipped kitchen, a weber braai on the patio-with-a-view, this all comes together to define this awesome dwelling place for just two in quietness, space and luxury.
The unpretentious barn style buildings sit quietly on the earth, comfortable in the rural farming environment of the eastern Free State Highlands, the exteriors belie the indulgent luxury of the interior of the cottages.

The Apothecary lies within the 164 hectare Amohela ho Spitskop Country Retreat & Conservancy – known locally as Spitskop – or in Sotho – Petsana ( The Small Foal). And here you step into the enchanting world of WildFields, where 20 years of dedicated REWILDING has transformed a once neglected landscape into a thriving haven for nature and humans alike.
In 2002 when Allen and I returned to this small farm and that wonderful mountain, we were aghast at the destruction that over farming and present day farming methods had done. It was a quiet sad place, in the evenings sitting outside on what was then a crumbling “veranda” the nights were still, no crickets, no frogs, just……silence….and uncomfortable nothingness kind of stillness. And so the healing began.
