Accommodation in Garden Bedrooms - A Getaway worth a Stay - in the Eastern Free State
Amohela ho Spitskop lies in a vast beautiful valley in the Eastern Free State, between the small rural farming villages of Ficksburg & Clocolan.
Tucked away in the gardens at Dassie House are Cornwallis and Nguni, two lovely free standing garden bedrooms.
The bedrooms are luxurious, well appointed, built from beautiful locally hewed sandstone blocks with nice beamed ceiling. Private and secluded, with pure cotton percale linen and heated blankets for chilly Free State winters, each has a small intimate seating area around the wood burning combustion fire, magazines and books, a brochure detailing local information and each has a hiking trails map, birding list, cycle routes and birding map.
Nguni has a beautiful Victorian bath and an enclosed shower and toilet, and Cornwallis has an enclosed shower and toilet.
There is a lovely covered bush-braai area with a barbecue, prepping area, cutlery and crockery, wash-up, electricity, all in a beautiful private spot of the garden, filled with birdsong and tables laid out under the trees, paraffin lantern’s for that wonderful old fashioned “Out of Africa” bush smell and ambiance, a really stunning cooking and relaxing area shared by the two bedrooms.
Accommodation is on a room only basis, coffee and tea making facilities in each room, and the bush kitchen is available for use by both bedrooms at no extra cost, and staff will service the area each day, as well as the bedrooms. Free WiFi is available, safe parking under the trees at the gate to the gardens.

In 2002 when Allen and I returned to this small farm and that wonderful mountain, we were aghast at the destruction that over farming and present day farming methods had done. It was a quiet sad place, in the evenings sitting outside on what was then a crumbling “veranda” the nights were still, no crickets, no frogs, just……silence….and uncomfortable nothingness kind of stillness. And so the healing began.
